Many people have been experiencing depression. Considered as one of the most leading cause of death, depression also has the tendency to impair an individual’s strength. No one is immune from this condition. About 18.8 million Americans are suffering from it, according to medical statistics. The National Institute of Mental Health reports that two percent of adults have it. The NIHM has seen that men and women between the ages 18–29 were seen to have a 70 percent possibility of acquiring it. The popularity of antidepressants has been increasing along with the growing number of people experiencing depression. However, the use of Zoloft has been linked to increased risks of lung disorder in newborns.
The development of depression involves a combination of several factors. Most psychiatrists believe that it is caused by a combination of psychological, social and biological elements that bring about certain effects or results. There is a short-term type of depression that stems from tremendous loss and grief. Chronic depression, on the other hand, is life-long and often blamed on childhood problems and abuse, among others. Genetics, as was believed by experts, play a big role in most cases of depression but should have a traumatic event to trigger it. Treatment needs to be improved, thus research is still being done.
It has been seen in most researches that effective treatment of depression revolves around the combination of medications and psychotherapy, research findings show. Biological factors were relieved by medications. Psychotherapy helps in dealing with the root cause of the severe low moods or the psychosocial factors. Undergoing therapy has had a higher success rate. Those that are only taking antidepressants will only be able to address the present physical symptoms but not the underlying cause of those low moods. There are questions among researchers whether antidepressants are really effective or not. SSRIs were seen not to have any desirable results.
Comparing antidepressants and placebos in a recent study have shown startling results. It was observed that a simulated or otherwise medically ineffectual treatment for a disease (through placebos) has the same effect as antidepressants minus the side effects. Despite these alarming findings, still there is an increase in the use of antidepressants. Most psychiatrists say that more research is needed for a full understanding I treatments used in mood disorders. The side effects of antidepressants may vary from person to person. The progress of treatment may be monitored through symptoms; that is why psychiatrists encourage their patients to report it. The main concerns for most long-terms users are the Zoloft side effects.
